Book Your Free Trial Space in Advance with a Dance Partner
When joining our fixed-partner classes, please ensure you book and attend with a dance partner. We set a 2-person minimum booking for our fixed-partner courses so please book both places at the same time using our online booking system. Simply book your spaces on our free trial class at the class that suits you best. Our system will send a registration email to confirm the venue, date and time details - please check your spam filter if these don't arrive in your inbox within an hour of booking.
Some people are lucky enough to find a dance partner easily. For those without an obvious dance partner, asking within their own network of friends, family, colleagues, and neighbours can reveal somebody who is interested to give the class a go.
Don't have a partner? You can also look out for dedicated partner rotation courses, where you can book on your own.
Who Typically Attends Venue-Based Classes?
Age ranges vary wildly, from our minimum of 18*-80. Our 'Fixed Partner' classes are particularly popular with couples keen to share a hobby and spend quality time together. This covers both young professionals as well as couples rebuilding a fun social life, perhaps after years of child-rearing. We also see lots of mother/daughter, sister/sister, girl/girl, boy/boy & girl/boy friend pairings.
Often reluctant husbands are dragged along by enthusiastic wives, yet by the end of the free trial, it is the gents who can't wait to sign up for the course.

Venue-based learning is supported by free access to the same online course, which is pre-recorded and available on-demand. If venue-based learning doesn't suit you, then join our online school to learn exactly the same content anywhere in the world!
What To Expect...
What to Expect on Free Trial Day
Arrive just before the advertised start time for your lesson so the teachers can greet you. Groups are typically between 12 and 30 people, everybody is an absolute beginner so everybody will be experiencing similar nerves and excitement. Once it's time to start we do a gentle warm-up and teach a couple of simple moves which you can dance on a loop. Before the end of the session, the teachers will demonstrate all the moves coming up on the course.

Beyond Absolute Beginners
Once you've completed the Absolute Beginner SwingJive Course, you'll be able to follow on to the natural continuation course, either Intermediate Yellow or Intermediate Green, which can be taken in either order.
Teachers will demonstrate moves for the continuation course, or you can view them on this link. There is a series of 9 x 10-week courses, progressing along a pathway that you can follow, explained on this link.
Swingeasy, our weekly PAYG class and dance format, is a great sociable alternative too.
Beyond these courses, you can find new challenges via workshops and mini-courses, and have fun at our live band events. Swinging Balls are open to all. Our celebrated Swinging Balls have been running for over 20 years. They have built a splendid reputation, attracting the UK's finest jive and swing bands along with huge attendances.

When To Join Advanced SwingJive Courses
The Advanced SwingJive level is ideal if you have completed all THREE 10-week Inters Plus SwingJive courses, "Orange", "Purple" and "Blue" in our series of SwingJive courses.
Dancers with experience that have not been following our courses should only consider this level if they are already comfortable with basic Charleston and the 6-beat rhythm.
The new Advanced level features 3 x 10-week courses containing the most challenging content on our regular courses. Each lesson features a challenging routine containing a new move. You'll also recap moves learned earlier on the same course and from Intermediate or Inters Plus levels. The remainder of each session is dedicated to freestyle practice, with our team on hand to offer personalised guidance.
Just like at the Inters Plus level, there are three courses and each course contains different content. The three courses rotate during the year, they are colour coded as follows:
- Violet in the Autumn term every year
- Teal in the Spring term every year
- Magenta in the Summer Term every year
That's right, we've had to dig deep in our pencil case to find some more colours!
As these three Advanced level courses are at the same level of difficulty, they can be taken in any order. That is, it doesn't matter which term of the year you start learning at the Advanced level.

Leader & Follower Roles
In partner dance styles, every duo consists of two roles working together: the leader and the follower. For a visual illustration, watch the video above, where Brooke (on the left) leads, while Debbie (on the right) follows:
Tickets & Lead/Follow Roles
- A similar number of leaders and followers make the class enjoyable for everybody.
- To keep Lead/Follow roles evenly distributed, "Follower" tickets are only offered when there are enough leaders, and vice-versa.
- "Open" tickets are always available, where you might be requested to lead or follow, contributing to a balanced class experience.

Book Your Free Trial Space in Advance
Simply book your spaces on our free trial class at the class that suits you best. Our system will send a registration email to confirm the venue, date and time details - please check your spam filter if these don't arrive in your inbox within an hour of booking.
You can book this course with or without a dance partner. On the 'Partner Rotation' courses, teachers will organise the room so that dancers rotate partners at regular intervals for participants, which makes it a great opportunity to socialise. Partner rotation courses are open to any number of participants.
Although we may offer "lead" or "follow" tickets that specify your role, anybody booking an "open" ticket could be asked to dance either role.
Want to stay with your dance partner throughout? You can also lookout for our 'Fixed Partner' courses, where you book with your partner and stay with them for the duration of the course.

Our 'Partner Rotation' classes are perfect for anyone who wants to experience the joy of dance, regardless of who you come with. Whether you're flying solo, or bringing a group of friends, you can still join the fun!

Join the Fareham team to learn Woodchoppers, the Jitterbug Stroll!
The evening will be broken into tuition for approximately 2 x 1 hour sections, with a nice break in the middle for you to refresh and enjoy a bit of social dancing!
This workshop is taking place before both the "1940s Themed Remembrance Day Dance" in Fareham the next week and the Xmas Swinging Ball on 20th December. We'll make sure you have a chance to practice the routine at both events!
More About The Jitterbug Stroll aka Woodchoppers!
This routine was choreographed by world-famous UK swing dancer Ryan Francois for the legendary Jitterbugs Club in London.
It's choreographed for dancing to the Woody Herman classic, "Woodchoppers Ball".
The structure is just perfect, with four repeatable sections designed to be performed to face each of four walls in a dance hall. Although some dancers have taken to using a circular formation, too.
For practice, a song with a slower tempo but a similar structure, "Hey! Ba-Ba-Re-Bop" by Lionel Hampton makes a great option!

Join us for our Autumn Class & Dance evenings at Farnborough Royal British Legion. This is a lovely social venue with parking and a bar!
Each of these evenings will feature one 30-minute class at the start of the evening with participation optional, along with dancing to swinging tunes until 9.30pm.
Spaces need to be pre-booked online via this booking page.
Guests can attend on their own or with a partner. Dancers will be invited to rotate during classes, those preferring to remain with a fixed partner are welcome to do so.
This evening is the perfect opportunity to keep practicing, whether you're currently attending regular classes elsewhere or if you're on a break and want to have a catch-up.
Everyone is welcome, but the evening would suit most people who have danced before and want a good fun evening out.

What to Expect in the Workshop
This intensive mini-course is split over two engaging evenings. Each evening will include fun sessions plus freestyle dancing time between and after sessions, too!
- Session 1: We'll kick off with a fun freestyle warm-up where Brooke can observe everyone's natural style. We'll work collaboratively, and then, based on his observations and your pre-submitted goals, you'll receive your first round of personalised feedback and guided practice.
- Session 2: We'll dive deeper into refining those key areas. You'll work through specific drills and sequences designed to help you apply the feedback, smoothing out your technique and boosting your confidence, all with ongoing guidance from Brooke.
Although these sessions will mainly be danced with a partner you book with, there will be some changing of partners as an essential part of evaluating each person's technique.
