Series of Monthly Workshops, 2026-27 in Farnham

Workshop Duration: 2-5pm, Saturday afternoons

Series Structure: 7 x 3-hour monthly, fun lindy hop workshops.

Workshop Structure: Each afternoon will be broken into 3 sections. One section will be focussed on learning moves, another section will help you think about concepts that can improve your dancing, and a third part of the afternoon will be allocated to building fun routines.

Enjoy music for freestyle practice between and after sessions.

Instructors: A different team of SDC instructors will lead each afternoon. We're summoning the most experienced lindy hoppers from our teaching team, to provide attendees with the widest exposure to different ideas about lindy hop.

Partners: Your choice - either attend with a partner and stay with them, or if you don't have a partner you can join a rotation. We're managing lead / follow bookings to help keep numbers as even as possible.

Location: All Hallows School, GU9 9HF

Both Fun and Challenging!

Lindy hop is a fairly challenging dance style, so it suits people with previous experience in other dance styles or quick learners in physical disciplines.

While everyone is welcome, this series was primarily created to provide broader experience for dancers who are reaching the end of our progressive SwingJive Courses. Anyone who has taken our Advanced level courses should flow beautifully onto this series.

However, we're excited to welcome others too!

  • Longer, weekend workshops open the door to those travelling from further afield.
  • Session 1 allows anyone the chance to get involved, so whether you've learned jive, tango, tap, ballet or ballroom, sign up and have a go!
  • Experienced hoppers craving more lindy action are very welcome, especially as we dive into Session 3 and beyond.

It's time to hop on the good foot!

Who Should Attend:

Who Should Attend:

Session 1 is foundational, so open to all.

Session 2 will make the hop from foundation to Intermediate. It's open to anyone with previous lindy hop experience, those who have attended any of our Advanced SwingJive classes and anyone who attended Session 1.

Sessions 3-7 are Intermediate level lindy hop workshops. Attendees should be comfortable with swing outs, Charleston and 6-beat rhythms, or have attended Session 1 and 2 of this series.

Session 1 - Learn to Lindy in an Afternoon

...with Brooke and Kirsty.

Open to anyone, build your lindy from the ground up. Covers swing outs, Charlestons, the 6 beat and 8 beat rhythms.

This class acts as a gateway to Session 2 and the rest of this series for those without any previous lindy hop experience.

Session 2 - Swing Out Brush-Up

This afternoon session will focus on the many shapes and forms of the swing out.

  • Looking to polish your technique? You need this session!
  • Already feeling confident? There's always something new to discover to take your swing out to the next level.

This class is your gateway to the rest of the series.

Session 3 - Swing Out & Travelling Charleston

Time to focus on connecting the swing out with the range of travelling Charleston moves. For those who have been through our series of courses, you'll start to see how it's built on a bedrock of lindy hop!

Session 4 - Lindy Fun!

You've built up that dancing confidence — now it's time to use it! We'll make you smile as we embrace the challenge of being imaginative and responsive to your partner, the music, and the room.

Session 5 - Variation-tastic!

There are a world of inventive variations to embrace - our imagination is the limit. We'll bring you some of those, plus supporting technique. Let's have some fun.

Session 6 - Swinging To The Music

Let's figure out how to take your dancing to the next level with the help of the music! We'll be building routines and using choreography to help.

Session 7 - Season Finale

Something special... to be revealed!

When to Join Inters Plus SwingJive Courses

The Inters Plus level is ideal if you have been dancing with us for 3 or more terms. This should mean you have completed Absolute Beginners, Yellow Intermediate and Green Intermediate Courses.

We run THREE 10 week Inters Plus SwingJive courses, "Orange", "Purple" and "Blue". These can be taken in any order and they are designed to follow on from our Intermediate SwingJive courses, where you will have learned basic Charleston and 6 beat rhythms which are essential foundation steps for the Inters Plus level.

We rotate Inters Plus SwingJive courses from one term to the next, so the Purple course starts in January, the Blue course starts after Easter and the Orange Intermediate Plus course starts in the Autumn.

Take a Look at the Moves on the Course...

What to Expect from Inters Plus Courses

Each Inters Plus SwingJive Course builds on what you have learned at the lower levels.

This level gives you new techniques. You will learn tips for responsible social dancing. We add popular strolls so you can start dancing without a partner! Variations on the basic Charleston are lots of fun and there are new moves including the occasional flashy dip or lean.

We're always referring back to moves you have already learned so you'll never forget them. Every time we show you a new move we will draw on moves that you already know to create new sequences. This course shows you how to extend those old moves. It challenges you to think about linking moves in ways you haven't done before.

We still maintain the popular format and structure of the Absolute Beginners and Intermediate SwingJive Courses so if you enjoyed those courses, the Intermediate Plus level courses will be a joy to take too.

When Can You Access Your Online Course?

The accompanying online course, which is offered free with every Beginner, Intermediate and Inters Plus level SwingJive course booked at your local venue, will be available to access before the 2nd lesson of the term at your local venue.

Every email address provided with a registration on the course at the local venue will receive an email containing a link with a unique voucher code a few days after the first lesson of the term. The link will allow the recipient to enrol in the relevant course free of charge at our online school. The full online course is available on demand as soon as you have enrolled in it at our online school.

Steve & Nicki Dancing

When To Join Advanced SwingJive Courses

The Advanced SwingJive level is ideal if you have completed all THREE 10-week Inters Plus SwingJive courses, "Orange", "Purple" and "Blue" in our series of SwingJive courses.

Dancers with experience that have not been following our courses should only consider this level if they are already comfortable with basic Charleston and the 6-beat rhythm.

The new Advanced level features 3 x 10-week courses containing the most challenging content on our regular courses. Each lesson features a challenging routine containing a new move. You'll also recap moves learned earlier on the same course and from Intermediate or Inters Plus levels. The remainder of each session is dedicated to freestyle practice, with our team on hand to offer personalised guidance.

Just like at the Inters Plus level, there are three courses and each course contains different content. The three courses rotate during the year, they are colour coded as follows:

  • Violet in the Autumn term every year
  • Teal in the Spring term every year
  • Magenta in the Summer Term every year

That's right, we've had to dig deep in our pencil case to find some more colours!

As these three Advanced level courses are at the same level of difficulty, they can be taken in any order. That is, it doesn't matter which term of the year you start learning at the Advanced level.

Please book and pay before the first lesson.

Take a Look at the Moves on the Course...

What to Expect from 10-Week Advanced SwingJive Courses

Each Advanced SwingJive Course builds on what you have learned at the lower levels. In particular, the Advanced SwingJive courses use the foundations of basic Charleston and 6-beat rhythm to bring you into the world of lindy hop.

The weekly format will see a routine at the start of the session followed by freestyle practice time. Just like in other courses, we repeat the new move from the previous lesson and a move from an earlier course, alongside the new move of the week. This means you are always enjoying a fresh move while reinforcing content learned in the past.

You will learn the Tandem Charleston, triple steps and the eight-beat rhythm, learning how to apply these appropriately and integrate them with your existing dancing. You'll be learning core lindy hop moves such as the swing out. You can consider yourself a lindy hopper after having completed your Advanced level courses.

Leader & Follower Roles

In partner dance styles, every duo consists of two roles working together: the leader and the follower. For a visual illustration, watch the video above, where Brooke (on the left) leads, while Debbie (on the right) follows.

Leaders are the architects of the dance—you learn the blueprint. For you, it’s less about 'performance' and more about 'navigation'.

Followers act as the interpreters of the music—you take the leader's suggestion and infuse it with your own intuition and style, bringing the joy that turns a simple step into a conversation.

What To Expect...

What to Expect on Free Trial Day

Arrive just before the advertised start time for your lesson so the teachers can greet you. Groups are typically between 12 and 30 people, everybody is an absolute beginner so everybody will be experiencing similar nerves and excitement. Once it's time to start we do a gentle warm-up and teach a couple of simple moves which you can dance on a loop. Before the end of the session, the teachers will demonstrate all the moves coming up on the course.

See What You Can Learn on The Full 10-Week Course...

Building Your Abilities Week-By-Week

The Absolute Beginners SwingJive Course continues on the same day, time, and place for 9 further one-hour sessions after the free trial week. The course builds week by week, recapping the move from the previous lesson as part of the standard format, and drawing on moves from earlier in the term as you start to build sequences.

For this reason, we don't want any participants to get left behind, so we are looking for people who can commit to attending most weeks (or can catch up via online learning). This ensures a higher quality learning experience for the whole group. For this reason, we only accept payment for the full course. Most customers understand the benefit of attending every week and pre-payment is a great incentive.

Each evening we run 2 or 3 x 1-hour classes. There is normally a 15-minute handover between classes. During this interval, (either before or after your lesson) we will leave music running, you are welcome to practice and chat with the team.

You'll Love The Music

You'll recognise most of the music we play. At the beginner level, we use big songs from big artists of the swing and rock'n'roll eras of the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

As you progress to higher levels we'll introduce you to more amazing music for dancing, some you may not have heard before! This includes original music from current jive, swing and rock'n'roll bands and less well-known retro music too.

Check out some of the typical music we use on this Spotify playlist below!

Beyond Absolute Beginners

Once you've completed the Absolute Beginner SwingJive Course, you'll be able to follow on to the natural continuation course, either Intermediate Yellow or Intermediate Green, which can be taken in either order.

Swingeasy, our weekly PAYG class and dance format, is a great sociable alternative too.

Beyond these courses, you can find new challenges via workshops and mini-courses, and have fun at our live band events. Swinging Balls are open to all. Our celebrated Swinging Balls have been running for over 20 years. They have built a splendid reputation, attracting the UK's finest jive and swing bands along with huge attendances.

When to Take The Intermediate Courses

The Green and Yellow Intermediate courses can be taken in either order. They are designed to follow on from our Absolute Beginners SwingJive Course. It is best to complete both of the Intermediate courses before moving on to the Inters Plus level SwingJive courses. We alternate Intermediate Green & Yellow courses, if the current term offers one colour, expect the other colour to be available the following term.

An Intermediate course is normally the best option if you have been dancing with us for one or two terms. That is, you have just completed the Absolute Beginners Course only, or the beginner's course plus the other colour Intermediate Course.

Take a Look at the Moves on the Course...

What to Expect from Intermediate Courses

Each Intermediate Course contains a similar number of moves to the Absolute Beginners Jive Course. The format and structure continue in the same pattern too.

On the beginner's course, we keep the footwork simple. Most of the moves on the intermediate course have simple footwork too. However, we do add in new footwork rhythms. The 6-Beat rhythm is added early in each Intermediate course, as is the Basic Charleston rhythm.

These new rhythms are great because they allow you to keep on dancing without having to keep on spinning all the time! Leaders can do a simple repeated rhythm and give themselves thinking time, followers get a rest from all the spins!

So if you loved the beginner's course you are sure to love the Intermediate SwingJive courses even more!

Everybody on an Intermediate course will receive a fun weekly email! It's packed with video reminders of your moves, sneak peeks of next week's steps, and your free access to our online course. Plus, we'll share other useful info about our classes and The Swing Dance Company, helping your dance journey flow smoothly!

When Can You Access Your Online Course?
